The Hist’s Maiden Speakers competition is the best introduction to public speaking and debating in College. Anyone can take part, as long as you’re a Trinity student and haven’t debated at University level before. The competition starts early in Michaelmas with non-competitive rounds to ease you into debating, then steadily picks up pace to finish with a black tie gala final in Week 10, followed by the Maidens Ball, one of the highlights of the Hist’s year.
We’ll also be running workshops every Wednesday afternoon where you can stock up on arguments and rhetorical firepower, and get to know your fellow Maidens.
In case your arguments are so good that the judges can’t understand them and eliminate you in favour of a lesser speaker, you can show them all in the Maidens plate competition (no actual plate), the Oscars – giving you a chance to win a Wilde Card into the Maidens Final.
You can sign up at the stand during Freshers Week and in the GMB during Week 1; email the Record Secretary at email@example.com for more details.
